The 2025 adaptation of Frankenstein brings new life, literally and emotionally to Mary Shelley’s classic tale. This version centers not only on the monstrous form of the Creature but on the monstrous experience of being misunderstood. The film emphasizes identity, acceptance, and the cruelty of a society that fears what it cannot easily define.

The story follows Dr. Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but emotionally detached scientist obsessed with pushing the limits of life. When he succeeds in creating a living being, he is horrified by what he has made and rejects it. The Creature, left alone, wanders the world searching for connection, only to be met with fear, prejudice, and violence, simply because of how he looks and how he exists.

Relating the Film to the LGBT Experience
For LGBT individuals, this narrative is painfully familiar. Many queer people grow up knowing they are different, but only learn to fear that difference once society reflects rejection back at them. Just like the Creature:
They are often misunderstood
Labeled as “wrong,” “unnatural,” or “other”
Forced to learn how to survive in spaces where they do not feel welcomed
Told to hide their identity to avoid harm
The Creature’s longing for companionship mirrors the LGBT community’s longing for safe spaces, chosen families, and unconditional love. His anger and sadness are not inherent traits, but responses to unrelenting judgment and abandonment which are something many queer individuals know too well.
In one of the film’s most poignant scenes (no spoilers!), the Creature finally finds a moment of connection, only for it to be destroyed by fear-driven violence. This echoes how relationships, self-discovery, and even joy within the LGBT community can be threatened by societal prejudice.
The Real Monster
This film highlights an important truth:
The monster was never the Creature. It was the fear of difference. The narrative invites viewers to reflect on how society creates “monsters” out of those who simply exist outside of the norm. The Creature did not choose to be made. LGBT individuals do not choose to be queer. But both are forced to carry the weight of others' fear, ignorance, and moral judgment.
Why This Story Matters Today
In a world where the LGBT community continues to fight for safety, rights, and recognition, Frankenstein (2025) becomes a mirror. It asks:
Who do we reject without understanding?
Who do we fear simply because they challenge what we’re used to?
How do we participate in the creation of “monsters”?
The film encourages empathy: to see beyond appearances, to listen to unheard voices, and to recognize that everyone wants the same things, love, belonging, and a place in the world.
Final Thoughts
Frankenstein (2025) is a powerful social reflection. For LGBT viewers, it hits deeply. It was a reminder of the pain of rejection, but also the resilience of those who continue to seek love and community despite it.
This film deserves to be seen not just for its artistry, but for the conversations it urges us to have.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ / 5A moving, haunting, necessary film about what it means to be human.
